Photo Tips

Taking good pictures is actually quite easy when you follow a few simple techniques. Whether you are using a digital camera or a film camera the basics are the same. If using a film camera we recommend using 200 speed film as this a good all around film for use indoors or out.

Picture Taking

The Following is a list of basics to keep in mind when taking a picture:

  •  Always have ample lighting, whether by natural light (the sun) or using the flash on your camera. When indoors always use the flash, this prevents the green or brown haze from florescent and tungsten lights. When outdoors remember to keep the sun at your back.
  • Zoom in or move closer to the object so that the object will completely fill the frame. This allows for better clarity and detail. Make sure your pictures are from angles that will show specific information important to the buyer, such as a product label or a damaged location.
  • Always keep the camera as still as possible taking the picture. This prevents the picture from being blurred.
  • When using a digital camera, set the camera to a non-high resolution setting if you can. The higher the resolution the larger the file size (500KB maximum per picture).
  • To avoid glare from the flash, take pictures at a slight angle from any flat surface of the object. This prevents the flash from reflecting directly back to your camera.

Uploading pictures to your ads

  • Any pictures you intend to use must be in either .GIF or .JPG format
  • The first picture you upload to an ad will be the Primary Photo. This picture will appear as a thumbnail on the ad if you select the gallery option when placing the ad.
  • If you are using a digital camera, upload your pictures to your computer as you normally would (see your camera's owners manual). When you are in the process of creating an ad choose "From  file: Browse" and select the location of your pictures that you uploaded to your computer. Click on the selected picture file, click Open and then click Upload Image.
  • If you are using a film camera, when you have your film developed ask that your pictures be returned to you on a CD. Insert your CD into your computer's CD drive. When you are in the process of creating an ad choose "From  file: Browse" and select the CD drive. Click on the selected picture file, click Open and then click Upload Image.
  • If you would like to upload a photo from a web site (URL), such as a picture from a manufacturers web site (URL), open another browser window and go to that web site. Put your curser over the picture and right click, select properties. Another smaller window will open titled Properties. (In the Properties window, please note the size:, as stated above this should not exceed the 500KB limit). Just above size: you will see Address: (URL). Beside this you should see something like http://.......................jpg. Next, left click and highlight http://.......................jpg, right click over the highlight and select copy. Go back to where you were placing your ad. Put your curser in the blank area beside From URL:, Right click, select copy. And then click Upload Image.

The above techniques are in no way a substitute for reading your own camera's operating manual. Having a thorough understanding of your equipment is the best way to achieve the best results.
